Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program
The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program’s (OYAP) goal is to connect students with work experiences that will lead to apprenticeship opportunities. OYAP allows students to get an early start on an apprenticeship in a skilled trade.
If you are entering Grade 11 and are at least 16 years old, you can work towards a career in a skilled trade as a registered apprentice. Eventually you can become a certified skilled worker or journeyperson, while you complete your Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
Benefits of OYAP:
- begin your post-secondary training while still in high school
- develop both specialized and general employment skills
- Receive 3-4 co-op credits toward your high school diploma for time spent in the work place. You also receive hours toward the total hours required for that particular trade apprenticeship, thus reducing your post-secondary qualification time.
- get your foot in the door with a potential employer/trainer
- prepare for technician/technologist post-secondary programs
- gain work experience and high-tech skills
- increase your academic readiness for apprenticeship programs at college
- increase your safety awareness
- learn first aid and CPR qualifications
In order to participate in OYAP, students must:
- You must be 16 years of age at the time the co-op placement begins
- have successfully completed 16 credits towards your OSSD
- have a sincere interest and aptitude for the skilled trade
